Getting Your Toddler to Listen
You will learn:
- Ways a toddler’s development impacts their listening skills
- Common traps parents fall into when trying to get their child to listen
- How to create more cooperation with a child without creating a power struggle
- Ways to move away from a punitive, controlling discipline system by using more effective parenting tools
- Ideas for fostering cooperation in the face of power struggles
Joanna Faber and Julie King, both mothers of three children, are the authors of the How to Talk book series. Joanna and Julie grew up together, having first met as babies. Joanna’s mother, Adele Faber, co-wrote a best selling series of books with another friend’s mother, Elaine Mazlish. The most famous of those books was How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk. Julie grew up to become a bilingual special-ed teacher in West Harlem and Joanna was a lawyer until she began having children. Eventually the two reunited to teach parenting workshops based on Joanna’s mother’s books. In the workshops, parents began to ask for versions of the books focused more on younger children. When approached to write another book, Adele said, “You write it.” Five years ago that book was published. They began to receive thankful emails from all over the world, including stories of how the book had changed families and also including many further questions that had not been addressed in the book. So another book was created, printing many of the letters and answering those questions.
You can find Joanna and Julie online at their website.
